What’s a transmission and what does it do?
While many of us own a car, not all of us are necessarily familiar with automotive mechanics. However, knowing a little bit about how a vehicle works could prove to be very useful when a problem comes up.
One of the main components that make a vehicle function correctly is the transmission. But what exactly does it do and how does it work? Here’s a basic explanation to give you a better idea.
Momentum to move forward!
In general, a transmission includes all of the elements that help transform and convey the rotation of the engine into movement of the drive wheels. The term “transmission” also refers to the part that’s primarily responsible for that function (a component that’s connected to the back of the engine).
Also connected to the gear box, the transmission moves the wheels forward at different speeds or cuts power to them entirely (in neutral) by disengaging them from the engine. It can also reverse the direction of the wheels, allowing the vehicle to back up.
When a transmission malfunctions
It’s very important to have your transmission serviced regularly, given the constant demand your vehicle places on it. Replacing the pan gasket and filter should be part of your regular transmission maintenance. It’s also important to change the fluid regularly (ideally at the same time as your seasonal oil changes) to prevent the transmission from wearing down as a result of overheating caused by excess friction.
Have you noticed any worrying signs of malfunction in your vehicle’s transmission? Any abnormality related to the transmission shouldn’t be ignored.
Below are a few indications of transmission problems. Be on the lookout for the following:
- Strange noises during gear changes
- Whistling coming from underneath the floorboard
- Grinding sounds when changing gears (manual transmissions)
- Lack of responsiveness when shifting
- Inability to change gears
- Slipping gears
- Delays in engaging gears
- Leaking dark red or brown fluid
- Illuminated Check Engine light
Has your transmission breathed its last?
After asking the advice of a transmission specialist and evaluating all of the possible options, you may be obligated to replace your transmission.
You have two choices: a new transmission or a rebuilt transmission.
The benefits of a rebuilt transmission
There are numerous advantages to using reconditioned parts. Unlike a refurbished part, a rebuilt part is thoroughly cleaned and certain components are replaced. In terms of quality and durability, reconditioned parts are virtually equivalent to new parts.
Here are two more good reasons to opt for a rebuilt transmission:
- Standardized procedures: the parts come from a known source and are guaranteed.
- Savings and environmental concerns: it’s expensive to manufacture new parts. With reconditioned parts, you can save up to 25 percent on the price, while also helping the environment!
